Holliday’s parents divorced when she was little. Her single mother “Gian Grainger”, who now works as a Graphic Designer in Manchester, raised her on her own but earlier she used to worked several jobs in order to enrol Holliday into piano, ballet & martial arts classes. In an interview Holliday revealed that she is part Italian as her grandfather was from Italy, a little village just outside of Rome, where she visits every now and then.

Her full name is “Holliday Clark Grainger” and as opposed to popular believes, she was not named after American jazz singer “Billie Holiday”. Her parents were playing word association for deciding the name and Holliday just popped from names like Mollie and Billie.

Till 2012, Holliday used to live with mother in Manchester. But then she bought her own home in Chorlton, Manchester and rents a residential house in Highgate, North London.

Then in 2007, she was enrolled into 3 year BA English Literature course from “University of Leeds”. But at that time, she was also climbing in her career with projects like “Waterloo Road”, “Waking the Dead” and “Demons”, so she couldn’t attend the classes and seminars regularly, so had to drop out of college.

In 2009, she enrolled herself Open University (OU) London and eventually graduated in 2012 with a First Class degree in English literature. During her graduation she got to play roles in films like “Jane Eyre”, “Anna Karenina” & “Great Expectations” and it had been very helpful in her studies as well as in her performance. She also attended GCSE drama course training.

Holliday made her TV Debut at the age of 6 when she played the role of “Kirsty” in 4 episodes of BBC’s 1994 Comedy Drama “All Quiet on the Preston Front”.

It was actually one of her mom’s friend, working in BBC, who got an audition for Holliday for the part of “Kirsty” through her another casting director friend.

Then in 1997, she appeared as child artist “Holly Grainger” in the BBC1 Comedy Drama “The Missing Postman”, in the role of “Harriet”.

Her next project as child artist “Holly Grainger” was in season 3-Episode 2 (The Monsters of Rock Festival) of ITV’s children’s comedy television series “Roger and the Rottentrolls” in 1998. She again appeared in season 4-Episode 3 (The Extremely Tempting Caravan) of the show in 2000.

Holliday made her big screen film debut, as a lead, with the 2009 British drama-thriller film “The Scouting Book for Boys”.

She then made her American film debut with the 2016 American action thriller film “The Finest Hours”, where she played the role of “Miriam”, the girlfriend of sailor Bernie Webber, played by “Chris Pine”.

She got the role of “Miriam Webber” accidentally when she was trying to find herself an agent in Los Angeles. One of her friends took her to a cooking class with her and by coincidence film director “Craig Gillespie” was also attending the class. They hit it off and he hired her in “The Finest Hours”
